There are several aspects of the skin that can be treated by stimulating collagen production. In younger skin, inducing collagen production can improve various types of scars, such as acne, stretch marks, fine lines and blemishes. On the other hand, in more mature skin, it can contribute to reducing superficial wrinkles, reducing sagging and also lightening spots.
Microneedling is an aesthetic treatment that stimulates collagen production through microperforations in the skin. With the healing process, the body increases the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the treated area, which results in a more uniform skin, with fewer spots and firmer.
Microneedling consists of applying microneedles to the skin, the length of which is adjusted on a case-by-case basis. The deeper the scars or wrinkles, the longer the needles must be, so that they can penetrate deeply into the skin and thus obtain the best possible result.
Before starting the treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleaned, in order to avoid infections or inflammations, and a topical anesthetic is applied to reduce the discomfort that the treatment can cause. At the end of the treatment, an active ingredient is applied to the treated area to promote deep hydration of the skin.
After this process, the skin goes through 3 stages of regeneration:
- Inflammation (after the mechanical stimulus, new cells begin to reproduce);
- Proliferation (cells multiply);
- Remodeling (the tissue is restructured and dead cells are eliminated, leaving the skin firmer and more uniform;
With this procedure, the amount of collagen can double, especially if actives are applied after the procedure.
Microneedling is an aesthetic treatment that is carried out in one hour, in the office. Although an anesthetic cream is used to avoid discomfort throughout the session, it is possible to feel some pain. Swelling and redness is also common and usually disappears after two or three days.
For those who have never performed the treatment, three to four sessions are recommended, with an interval of one month between them. For maintenance, a session every six months is recommended, but this period may vary from case to case.
In terms of contraindications, microneedling should be avoided in cases of pregnancy, herpes, predisposition to develop keloids, chronic diseases and taking anticoagulant drugs or isotretinoin.
