Rhinoplasty is one of the most performed surgeries in the world, as the nose is one of the elements of the face that most influences facial harmony . The shape of the nasal dorsum, the opening of the wings, the tip of the nose and even its size are aspects that directly contribute to a beautiful facial structure. Congenital malformations or traumas that occur throughout life can compromise not only aesthetic aspects and consequently self-esteem, but also respiratory capacity.

Rhinoplasty is plastic surgery that can change the appearance, structure and functional aspects of the nose . Through Rhinoplasty we were able to improve facial harmony and correct respiratory dysfunctions, restoring quality of life and self-esteem.

No two surgeries are the same and, as such, prior to a Rhinoplasty it has to be carefully evaluated to determine what can be treated. In this type of surgery, dialogue between specialist and patient is particularly important, bearing in mind that it is essential to compare expectations with real possibilities for improvement.

Surgical treatment - Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty has two different surgical approaches . The most common is closed rhinoplasty , where incisions are made inside the nasal cavity so that no scar is visible. In this approach, surgeons model the bones and cartilage to give the nose a new shape and structure.

Open rhinoplasty is chosen . The difference is that this surgery leaves a small scar at the base of the columella (skin flap that separates the two nostrils). However, after recovery, this scar is completely unnoticeable.

There is the idea that Rhinoplasty is only intended to reduce the nose. However, there are cases in which it is necessary to provide greater projection, either at the tip or back, or to correct specific deformities. In these cases, bone and cartilage grafts are harvested from the patient to shape the nose and correct unwanted elements.

Crisalix: 3D simulation of the results

Today, through 3D technology, we are able, before Rhinoplasty, to carry out a simulation so that it is possible to visualize what the final results of the nose correction will be . After taking photographs of the patient’s face in our studio, the simulation is carried out using a software called Crisalix where it is possible to adjust the aspects to be improved. This simulation is sent to the patient, after consultation, for analysis and approval and later discussed with the medical team.

Rhinoplasty : What else you need to know about the surgery

Rhinoplasty, at Clínica Baptista Fernandes, is performed on an outpatient basis and takes between 1 hour and a half to 2 hours to be performed, depending on the aspect to be treated. The surgery needs to be performed under general anesthesia and, as a rule, a one-day hospital stay is required.

Rhinoplasty is not painful, but in the post-surgical process, you may feel some discomfort due to the tampons that are introduced into the nostrils and that are only removed 48 hours after the surgery . You will also wear a splint that covers the entire nose and is removed after 1 week, after which you can resume your normal daily activities.

Common questions

Until the age of 15, the nose is not yet completely formed and, therefore, it is advisable to perform the surgery from the age of 16. In cases of severe disfigurement, surgery can be performed sooner but will likely require a surgical revision in the future.

One week after surgery, the splint is removed and the results are already visible. However, you will only be able to perceive the final result after 6 months, when the nose will have its new definitive shape.

In the 6-month consultation, you should exchange views with your doctor and, if you are not satisfied, you may be referred for a review of the surgery after 1 year.
