When do postpartum scars occur?

Pregnancy and childbirth are monumental moments in a woman’s life. However, many women find their self-esteem impacted by noticeable or painful postpartum scars. In this article, we explore why women develop scars after childbirth and the types of deliveries that commonly result in these marks.

Causes of postpartum scars

Surgical incision: In some cases, a cesarean section is necessary due to maternal and or fetal medical indications. During a cesarean, the doctor makes an incision in the abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby. This surgical incision is one of the primary causes of postpartum scars.

Episiotomy: During vaginal births, an episiotomy can be executed to prevent severe lacerations, especially if the newborn is bigger and the passage through the birth canal is more challenging. It involves making a deliberate, lateral cut in the perineum (the tissue between the vagina and anus) to facilitate the baby’s passage. A small scar may remain after healing.

Lacerations: In some cases, women may experience various degrees of lacerations during vaginal birth, which require suturing and can leave visible and painful scars after complete healing.

Postpartum scars are common and often unavoidable. Whether from a cesarean, episiotomy, or lacerations, these scars mark the incredible process of bringing new life into the world. However, if these marks bother you, there are ways to treat them to make them less noticeable.

How to treat postpartum scars?

Fortunately, advancements in aesthetic medicine and regenerative gynecology offer innovative treatment options to improve the appearance and sensitivity of postpartum scars. One notable option is the Fotona laser, which is effective in reducing scars and enhancing vulvovaginal health.

Fotona Laser for Postpartum Scars

The Fotona laser is an advanced medical technology that uses precise light beams to treat various skin and mucosal conditions. For postpartum scars, the Fotona laser can:

Stimulate collagen production: The Fotona laser emits energy pulses that heat the skin or vaginal mucosa, stimulating collagen production. It helps smooth the scar’s texture and improve skin elasticity.

Reduce pigmentation: If the scar is hyperpigmented (darker than the surrounding skin), the Fotona laser can reduce pigmentation, making it less visible.

Improve blood circulation: Enhanced blood flow in the treated area can accelerate the healing process and improve the appearance of scars.

Vulvar Peels for Postpartum Scars

Vaginal peels are also minimally invasive procedures aimed at improving genital sensitivity and treating postpartum scars. They offer the following benefits:

Scar and wrinkle reduction: In addition to treating postpartum scars, genital peels can smooth wrinkles and fine lines in the vulvar region.

Skin tone uniformity: Genital peels reduce hyperpigmentation, making the skin lighter and more uniform in color.

Improved vulvar elasticity and firmness: Genital peels can also help restore the vulva’s elasticity and firmness, which may be affected by aging, vaginal birth, or other factors.
