What Are Varicose Veins and What Causes Them?

Varicose veins are a common condition that causes veins to become enlarged and twisted. They most often appear in the legs and feet. The primary cause of varicose veins is the malfunctioning of vein valves. These valves direct blood flow from the legs back to the heart. When they fail, blood can accumulate in the veins, causing them to dilate and form varicose veins.

Several factors contribute to the development of varicose veins. Age is a major factor, as vein valves can weaken over time. Genetics also play a role, with a family history of varicose veins increasing the risk. Other factors include obesity, lack of physical exercise, pregnancy, and prolonged use of contraceptives.

Varicose veins are classified based on their appearance and severity. Milder varicose veins may not present significant symptoms beyond being visible, while more advanced varicose veins can cause pain, swelling, burning, itching, and a more prominent appearance.

Although varicose veins are common, proper treatment is important to prevent complications like leg ulcers or superficial and deep vein thrombosis. Treatment can include lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, weight loss, and the use of compression stockings. In more advanced cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to remove or destroy the affected veins.

How to Treat Varicose Veins?

There are several ways to treat varicose veins, depending on the severity of the condition. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes to surgical procedures.

Lifestyle Changes

Simple lifestyle changes can help reduce discomfort and prevent the progression of varicose veins. Some effective practices include:

Exercise: Regular physical activity can improve blood circulation and strengthen muscles and vein walls.

Weight Loss: Reducing excess weight can decrease pressure on leg veins, helping prevent varicose veins.

Leg Elevation: Elevating your legs above heart level for 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day can help alleviate swelling and pain.

Compression Stockings: These stockings improve blood circulation in the legs and reduce swelling.

Medical Treatments

In some cases, lifestyle changes need to be combined with medical procedures:

– Phlebectomy: A surgical procedure that removes affected veins through small incisions in the skin.

– Foam Sclerotherapy: A procedure performed in a doctor’s office that doesn’t require anesthesia or incisions.

– Thermal Ablation: A surgical procedure where affected veins are destroyed by heat (radiofrequency or laser) and are subsequently absorbed by the body.

– Glue Closure (Cyanoacrylate): A surgical procedure where affected veins are closed with biocompatible glue, redirecting blood to healthier veins.

It is important to note that varicose vein treatment should be personalized for each patient, considering the disease stage and other medical conditions. Often, a combination of different techniques provides the most effective and long-lasting results. Seeking medical advice is crucial to determine the most suitable treatment options.
